Community Cats in Québec
A Presence in Our Communities
Across Québec, many cats live outdoors without stable protection or an identifiable owner.
They are often called stray cats, but they are also known as community cats because their presence is closely linked to our communities and to human decisions.
Many are born on the streets. Others come from abandonment or from unplanned litters.
Over time, these cats must learn to survive in difficult conditions, exposed to hunger, disease, and the dangers of the street.
Understanding the situation
A community cat is not a wild animal. It is a cat that lives outdoors and often depends, directly or indirectly, on the presence of people.
Without large-scale spaying and neutering, these populations can grow quickly, leading to suffering for the animals and placing significant pressure on shelters and communities.
Why Action Is Needed
Feline overpopulation is not an isolated situation.
It now affects many regions of Québec and impacts animals, shelters, and communities alike.
Without coordinated measures to prevent abandonment and control reproduction, this cycle repeats itself year after year.
Understanding this reality is the first step toward responding to it collectively.

The Great Walk for Our Community Cats
On April 4, 2026, citizens walked simultaneously in several cities across Québec to bring visibility to the reality of community cats and to call for concrete measures to reduce feline overpopulation. A citizen mobilization across Québec.
